Fall is now well established, and at Gazon Bastien, we want to help you prepare your lawn for winter. With more than 60 years of expertise, we are here to guide you through the key stages of closing your land. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions so you can maximize the health of your lawn while enjoying the final moments of the season.
Not this time! At the beginning of autumn, your lawn is entering “rest” mode to prepare for winter. Adding fertilizers, especially those rich in nitrogen, could disrupt this natural cycle. Resist the temptation to use your 4E fertilizer stage. Instead, let nature do its work to ensure a well-supplied green carpet in spring.
Absolutely! In fact, it's the perfect time. Our 20 kg lime bag covers 3000 ft² and is just a click away in our online store. Here's a little tip from Bastien to make sure you don't forget anything: apply lime after the children go back to school in September. Like a deserved break for your lawn!
Not quite! The Bastians recommend sowing either in spring (from May 15 to June 15), or at the end of summer (from August 15 to September 15). So, although your seeds are growing now, they may not survive the winter. Instead, opt for peat rolls at this time of the year. They will take root more firmly before the first frost arrives, ensuring a green lawn next year.
This will prevent snow and debris from damaging your lawn. Make sure the canvas is well perforated to let light through, and avoid construction tarps, which could suffocate your grass.
Wait approximately 10 to 14 days after installing your new lawn before mowing it. In autumn, set your mower to 2.5 inches, and for the last mowing (mid-November), to 2 inches. Remember to follow the one-third rule: never cut more than a third of the grass's height to prevent disease.
Take advantage of autumn to aerate and soil. Cool conditions and sunny days are ideal for these operations, especially if you are short on time in spring.
Don't neglect the maintenance of your lawn mower! Sharpening your blades for the last cuts of the season not only helps prevent disease, but it also ensures a clean and healthy cut for your lawn.
Have a nice end to the season!
